Instagram DM automation:answer comments in private.
Anyone who comments "price" or a keyword you choose gets a private message by your rule and is saved as a lead. Auto-replies to incoming DMs are a separate setting and are off by default.
What Instagram DM automation is
Answering every "price?" comment by hand does not scale during a launch. Automation ties it to a rule: when the keyword appears in a comment, the person gets a private message, and you only talk to the people who reply.
Two different automations are often mixed up. One answers a comment with a private message; the other replies to incoming DMs. In the panel they are set up on separate screens.
| Comment to DM | Auto-reply to DMs | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | A keyword you choose, in a comment | A message the person sends |
| Who writes the message | You, as a template | AI drafts it and sends it if enabled |
| Default state | Runs once you create a rule | Off |
| Meta limit | One message per comment, within 7 days | Standard window is usually 24 hours |
| Where the person lands | Lead list | Inbox |
How comment-to-DM works
- 1Comment arrives
Meta notifies the panel; the comment lands in the inbox with the post thumbnail.
- 2Rule matches
If one of the keywords appears, the first matching rule runs.
- 3Message goes out
Name, coupon and link are filled into the template and sent privately.
- 4Public reply
Optionally, a short public note is posted under the comment.
- 5Lead saved
The person is added to the lead list and you get a notification.
- Matching ignores case; the keyword only has to appear somewhere in the comment.
- A rule can run on Instagram, Facebook or both.
- Rules run on every post; the screen has no option to limit a rule to a single post.
- The public reply is independent of the DM: the comment is answered even if the message fails.
- The comment and its post also appear in the inbox of the social media management tool, where you can reply by hand.
Setting up an auto DM rule, step by step
- 1Connect your Instagram account in the panel; the connection requires a professional account.
- 2Open a new rule on the Comment to DM screen, or start from one of the ready-made templates.
- 3Name the rule and choose the platform: Instagram, Facebook or both.
- 4Add keywords one by one; any one of them in a comment triggers the rule.
- 5Write the message template. Placeholders cover the person's name, the coupon, a link and the post link.
- 6Optionally add a public reply, a coupon code and the link you want to send people to.
- 7Set the cooldown; the default is 24 hours.
| Field | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Words that trigger the message | price, how much, stock |
| Message template | The text the person receives | Hi {{commenter_name}}, your code: {{coupon}} |
| Public reply | A note posted under the comment | Check your DMs! |
| Coupon code | Fills the coupon placeholder | WELCOME15 |
| Link | Fills the link placeholder | Your product or form page |
| Cooldown | Delays repeat messages from the same rule to the same person | 24 hours |
Meta's rules: 7 days, one message, 24 hours
Meta sets the limits, not the tool. These rules apply to every Instagram automation tool; a campaign that ignores them finds out late that messages it counted as sent never reached anyone.
- Only one private reply can be sent to a commenter, within 7 days of the comment. Source: Meta's private replies documentation.
- If the person replies, a conversation opens; a follow-up can only be sent within 24 hours of that reply.
- If the person follows your account the message lands in their inbox; otherwise it lands in message requests.
- For incoming DMs the standard window is usually 24 hours, and up to 7 days after a first message from a click-to-Direct ad. Source: Meta's messaging policy.
The app side needs permissions too: comment management for comments and message management for DMs. Apps that serve accounts they do not own pass Meta's review for these; the conditions are in the messaging API documentation.
Auto-replies to incoming DMs and after-hours mode
DMs and comments from Instagram and Facebook land in the panel's inbox. If you turn on auto-reply, AI reads the message and the last few messages from that person, drafts a reply and sends it.
- Auto-reply is off by default and is switched on separately for DMs and for comments.
- With "only outside working hours", your team answers during the day and the system at night.
- With handoff on, anyone who asks for a person gets your saved WhatsApp or phone number; with no number saved, nothing is sent.
- The same person never gets a second auto-reply within 10 minutes, so two accounts cannot loop.
- If no reply can be drafted, nothing is sent and the conversation waits for you.
Where people who get a message are saved
When the message is delivered, the person is added to the lead list with the "Comment to DM" source. You follow the lead to a sale in the CRM.
- The screen shows 30-day counters: active rules, messages sent, triggers and leads.
- Leads who left contact details are counted separately.
- If a message fails, no lead is created and the reason is kept in the event log.
What the automation does not do
These are the limits to know before you buy. Each comes either from Meta's rules or from what the product covers today.
- No multi-step flows, buttons or follow-up sequences; a rule sends one text message.
- Rules are triggered by comments only; a keyword in a DM does not trigger a rule, DMs are handled by auto-reply.
- A fixed opt-out line is added to the end of each message. Today that line is in Turkish only.
- No tool can guarantee that someone who does not follow you accepts a message request.
A Manychat alternative? When each one fits
Manychat is a dedicated chat automation tool; according to its own site it runs on Instagram, Messenger, TikTok and Telegram, with WhatsApp on paid plans. In AgentFabrica, DM automation is one part of a panel that also covers content, publishing, ads and reporting.
| AgentFabrica | Manychat | |
|---|---|---|
| Comment to DM | Yes, keyword rules | Yes |
| Multi-step flows and buttons | No, a rule sends one message | Its core feature |
| Replies to incoming DMs | AI reply, off by default | Yes |
| Lead capture | Straight into the CRM | Its own contact list |
| Content creation and publishing | In the same panel | Not in scope |
| Pricing | Plan price published | Based on active contacts |
Manychat facts come from Manychat's own pages, 3 October 2026. Prices and limits change, so no amounts are listed.
Where to start
- 1Open a free account and see Instagram comments and DMs in one inbox.
- 2Create your first rule with a single keyword for a campaign post and watch the 30-day counters.
- 3Compare which plans include it on the pricing page.
- 4If you would rather not run it yourself, our WhatsApp chatbot service operates the inbox and comment rules for you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set up Instagram DM automation?
Connect your account, open a rule on the Comment to DM screen and write the keywords and the message template. When a keyword appears in a comment, the person gets a private message.
Does everyone who comments get a DM?
No. A message goes out only when one of your keywords appears in the comment. Meta allows one private reply per comment.
Why does the message show up in requests instead of the inbox?
If the person does not follow you, Meta puts the message in their requests folder. A short public reply under the comment helps them notice it.
Can I message people who commented weeks ago?
Meta accepts private replies within 7 days of the comment. The automation runs when a comment arrives, so it does not send bulk messages to old comments.
Can I auto-reply to incoming DMs?
Yes. Turn on DM auto-reply in the inbox settings; it can run only outside working hours. It is off by default.
Does it work on Facebook Page comments?
Yes. A rule can run on Facebook, or on both platforms.
Is this a Manychat alternative?
For comment-to-DM and lead capture, yes. For multi-step chat flows with buttons, Manychat is the better fit; here a rule sends one message.
Is it on the free plan?
The shared inbox is on the free plan. Comment-to-DM and auto-reply come with an upgrade.
